This simple recipe is designed to help pick you up when you are feeling unwell or in pain. Not only is it tasty and nutritious, but it has been designed to help reduce a multitude of health problems that might be making you feel ill, and help you recover faster.

Servings: 1

Ingredients:

 1 Ripe Avocado
 1 tbsp Coconut oil
 1 tsp Tumeric
 ¼ tsp Cracked Black Pepper
 ½ tsp Garlic Powder
 ½ tsp Ginger Powder
 ¼ Lemon Juiced
 3 Sprigs of Parsley

Directions:

1

Slice your avocado in half. You can either scoop out your avocado or to save on washing up (who wants to wash up when they are ill?!?) then score the avocado with a knife (being careful not to go through the outer skin, to make it easier to mash-up, and add the other ingredients spilt between the two halves.

Avocado makes a perfect base food when you are unwell - easy to eat, abundant in nutrients and healthy essential fats which actually help to reduce inflammation. These fats also improve nutrient uptake as vitamins such as A, D, E and K need to be combined with fat for the body to be able to use them as well as more than doubling antioxidant uptake. 75% of the fibre in avocado is soluble which helps to feed friendly bacteria in the gut. Avocados have also been shown to lower cholesterol levels and blood triglycerides. Those with a higher amount of avocado frequently in their diets have also been linked to reduced occurrences of metabolic syndromes as well as having a lower level of obesity.

2

Add the juice of half a lemon - Lemon is acidic to eat but has a strong alkalizing effect on the body which helps to correct any pH imbalances. Being high in vitamin C it helps the immune system protect against viruses, as well as stimulating the liver to detoxify the body. The citric acid in lemons helps to break down calcium deposits, including those formed within tendons, gall stones, and kidney stones. Lemon has also been found to help kill off intestinal worms as well as a variety of harmful bacteria. The bioflavonoids found in lemons have also been found to be linked to reductions in blood pressure and internal bleeds. Rutin found in lemons have been demonstrated by research to be linked to a reduction in eye disorders including diabetic retinopathy. And as if that wasn't enough, lemons also contain 22 anti-cancer compounds.

3

Add Tumeric and black pepper - Tumeric is full of an active component called curcumin which is more easily used by the body when combined with pepper. Not only is it considered to be Cox-2 inhibitor anti-inflammatory, it is also a natural pain killer and antibacterial. Studies comparing the effectiveness of ibuprofen compared to curcumin found no significant difference between the two with knee arthritis and has been found to be more effective than diclofenac in treating rheumatoid arthritis joint pains. Research has shown it to cause cell death and inhibitory actions on several different types of cancer. It is thought that this powerful spice also has an inhibitory effect on Alzheimer's due to the very low proportion of people suffering from the disease in areas where the consumption is high. It has been shown to be beneficial in treating degenerative eye problems as well as helping to moderate diabetic changes with blood sugar and insulin. Tumeric helps the liver to recover when damaged through alcohol amongst other reasons and can as a neuroprotective component with early research demonstrating improvements when used with Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. Curcumin has been demonstrated as being equally effective as Prozac in treating depression.
However, if you are pregnant you probably won't want to eat it in excess as it can also act as a uterine stimulant.

4

Add Garlic powder (you can make your own by crushing the garlic to release more allicin, dehydrating it, then pop it in a coffee grinder or high-speed blender) - The active ingredient called allicin which is not only responsible for the garlic smell but also protects against heavy metal poisoning and significantly boosts the immune system. It has been found to significantly reduce the occurrence of illness through viruses such as the common cold and flu as well as significantly reducing the recovery time needed. In high quantities, it has been found to be as effective as the drug atenolol in reducing high blood pressure as well as reducing cholesterol levels at the same time. Garlic,c has also been shown to increase antioxidant enzyme activity, increase exercise tolerance in those with heart disease and reduce oestrogen deficiency during menopause.

5

Add ginger powder (you can make your own by dehydrating slices of ginger then adding to a coffee grinder or high-speed blender to turn it into a powder) - Ginger contains an active component called gingerol which has strong anti inflammatory and anti oxidative effects as well as reducing feelings of nausea and discomfort of indigestion as it reduces the time it takes for the stomach to empty. Ginger has been found to be effective in reducing exercise induced muscle pain and reduced the requirements for pain relieving medications in a study of ginger with osteoarthritis. It was found to be equally as effective as the drugs ibuprofen and mefenamic acid in treating menstrual pain. Ginger has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels as well as oxidized lipoproteins, cholesterol and blood triglycerides which are risk factors for heart disease. Raw ginger also contains an anti-cancer component and can help improve brain function by reducing inflammatory responses in the brain and has been linked to improved reaction times and memory retention. Ginger has been found to lower the risk of contracting viruses and can inhibit the growth of several bacteria types, being especially potent for oral problems and respiratory infections.

6

Add the coconut oil - Well over 1500 studies have shown beneficial effects of coconut oil. The medium chain fatty acids found in coconut oil have been found to be a natural antibiotic, antifungal AND antiviral. It can heal urinary and kidney infections, reduce candida and create a hostile environment for viruses, amongst many others. It kills bacteria by disrupting the lipid coating on the bacteria and so destroying them. It can also reduce inflammation and work as a painkiller more effectively than several drugs when compared directly for arthritis. The fatty acids are able to provide a longer sustained energy supply as well as fuel the brain more efficiently as they do not require insulin. They have been linked to improvements in memory and increases in outcomes for triathletes, as well as stabilising blood sugar in diabetics. Coconut oil helps improve gut health by selectively destroying unhelpful bacteria and fungus, making it easier for healthy bacteria to flourish as well as reducing symptoms of stomach ulcers, ulcerative colitis, and gallbladder disease. It also has antioxidants that help with skin healing. It improves calcium absorption and has been linked to increased bone density as well as helping build muscle and balancing hormone function. The Capri acid in coconut oil also helps to improve thyroid function and lower the resting heart rate.

7

Chop Your parsley sprigs and add them in too - Parsley is high in antioxidants and iron, reducing fatigue if you are a little anaemic, It is rich in anti-cancer compounds and has been shown to inhibit growth and migration of some tumours. It also supports kidney function, has some anti-inflammatory properties, helps to relax stiff muscles and improves digestion.
